I have a patch that adds to the kmfilter.cpp file a filter that allows a user 
to change the status of a message to any of the statuses in the Message->Set 
Status menubar.

Filters are relatively easy to add to the codebase of KMail to add your own 
filter types.  Just follow through kmfilter.cpp and you'll get the general 
idea.
