Huh? So a user recognises that the icon is KDEs logo, that doesn't help 
him understand that it's a very special button. Also a background image 
does not necessarily make an icon less recognisable. What if this 
background was just a simple border?

It helps by reducing the chance of clicking on the kmenu on a whim. This 
is a very bad approach to guiding the user to the kmenu, because you're 
making other applications that were previously on kicker harder to 
access (now, i wounldn't mind seeing this done for the konsole icon 
however ;)
