I don't think it is a good idea to depend on colors to pass information.

How would be a good implementation of this?
I can't think of an implementation in which my mom wouldn't ask me what 
happened to "her" menu.

Sorry, but I don't see a logical connection here. What has the MIME type to do 
with the way I want my menu to look?

And even though what you call "windows style of editing from menu's" is a bit 
awkward, it is far more useful than having to open a separate menu editor 
anytime you want to to a simple change.
