Ok, I agree that this is probably what works for most people. Is there
a measurable improvement with larger fragments? If not, it would be
better to revert the change.

There is one problem with your change towards larger fragments, which
is quantization. If you have fragments of 4096 bytes, external events
can occur at 0ms, 23ms, 2*23ms, 3*23ms, ... - if you have larger
fragments, it gets worse, which is 0ms, 46ms, 2*46ms, 3*46ms.
