You can install multiple QT libraries by setting the install directory 
to include the version number:

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/qt-<version>

I usually build from source.  You can define the install directory with 
rpms and .deb packages if you prefer to install binaries.  I have the 
following versions of QT installed:

$ ls -d /usr/local/qt*
/usr/local/qt-2.3.0  
/usr/local/qt-3.0.4  
/usr/local/qt-3.1.0  
/usr/local/qt-3.1.1

LICQ is running fine off of qt-3.0.4, KDE-3.1 is working off of qt-3.1.
