I would estimate that fist version of KDE4 is 6-9 months away. Before
most important bugs are squashed out (as always with new technology), I
would estimate a year. Only after that KDE4 will slowly get into
distributions. It is another year of stalled improvements in KDE, while
our competitors are moving forward at a fast pace (mainly talking Gnome
here). There is a reason why recent improvements in desktop are
happening in Gnome - think Compiz/Beryl, Matisse, accessibility
framework, etc.
KDE might have a breakthrough technology coming up, but it is taking too
long and users do not want to wait.

I share the same view. Well maybe not "not developing for KDE4", but
"letting people work on KDE3". I really like Aaron Seigo balanced view
on this point :) KDE3 is needed by many people and will be in at least a
year time. So don't bash people who want to work on it.

I think the timing for KDE4 development is really unfortunate. This year
is the year when Vista comes out and there is an opportunity to draw
disappointed Windows users to Linux. Stalling improvements in existing
and proved technology (KDE3) in order to present them with brilliant
technology later (KDE4) is not going to help. It will be too late.

Just my opinion.
