I thought that the alpha blending provided by the RENDER extension (and
what QT 3.0 relies on?) does not support real-time translucency in the
sense that X does not notify obscured windows to repaint, even if the
obscuring window is translucent.  Look at Mosfet's liquid style -- if you
pull up a translucent menu, and a window partially obscured by the menu
updates, then you won't see the update *through* the menu (only around the
menu).

So... is it possible all of a sudden to have true, really really real-time
translucency?

There was a mock-up of how nice KDE can look with some careful shadowing
and translucency (including, as you mentioned, Jono, a transparent Kicker)

I especially like the idea of being able to set a window's translucency.  
That is really a handy feature (when I am copying down data manually and
can't cut-and-paste, I want to see both windows fully and unobscured).  
looks cool, definately something I want to see in KDE (among other
things!).
