ok I will say this in defense of RedHat even though I don't personally use it.....they
have gpl'd their most valuable contributions to Linux and as far as I am concerned they
have played fair ball with the Linux community...so to has Debian....but the package
manager issue is still despicable....I am happy to hear that a RedHat system does
support and build tarballs because these are the key to the free flow of intellectual
ideas around the globe.
One thing however...I am concerned that RedHat is entering into Microsoft territory.
It does not seem to understand that IBM, SUN,SGI, DIGITAL,COMPAQ, HEWLITT PACKARD and
others are all hardware manufacturers that specialize in selling proprietary and
restricted software along with Microsoft...In fact many of these are long term
Microsoft cohorts and consider the free software developers the enemy....this is a
serious problem because what will keep them from chewing RedHat to pieces and stealing
its accomplishments and handing over its ideas to Microsoft or worse to their own
commercial UNIX platforms...this is the kind of business they like....they thrive on
selling commercial software...
Therefore I am concerned about RedHat entering the Microsoft camp somewhat unarmed and
unaware of the unscrupulous tactics employed by UNIX or Microsoft vendors that consider
GNULINUX their sworn enemy.
