Thanks, that works.
But now I have another problem. The *.po files, which were used to generate 
those *.mo files, have a content type like:
"Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1\n"
When I load the corresponding *.mo file, "Umlaute" aren't displayed.
Does KDE expect, that *.po files are in utf8 format, or is this just a 
problem with my setup (the i18n.kde.org site isn't clear about this)?
I can't change those catalogues, because they are not part of my program 
(they belong to sane lib).

Btw, the translations are correctly displayed with gtk apps (i.e. xsane).
My KDE settings are:
Language: de
Charset: iso8859-15
KDE 2.2.1
Changing the charset makes no difference;
When I load such a *.po file with KBabel and change the charset to utf8, then 
it works without problems.
