You can manipulate the standard directories. E.g.
KGlobal::dirs()->addResourceDir("locale", "/absolute_path");

But below the absolute_path there must be a <lang>/LC_MESSAGES/ directory.
In that directory you can put whatever you put into KLocale::insertCatalogue
