A backslash in the username (Login ID) confuses kppp.
A similar problem is reported already with the "/" character:
KDE bug report logs - #2419

kppp version 1.3.3
pppd version 2.3 patch level 5
Linux manila 2.0.36 #1 Sun Jan 17 17:31:24 MET 1999 i586 unknown

Problem: kppp (pppd) does not accept the ConfReq for <auth chap 80>
and send a ConfRej <auth chap 80>.
This happens, when the Login ID contains the backslash character "\".

Here is a part of the log-file:

Jan 27 13:28:51 manila pppd[485]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <magic
0x1412ba3a> <p
comp> <accomp>]
Jan 27 13:28:51 manila pppd[485]: rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x0 <asyncmap
0x0> <auth
chap 80> <magic 0x63c> <pcomp> <accomp>]
Jan 27 13:28:51 manila pppd[485]: sent [LCP ConfRej id=0x0 <auth chap
80>]

Here the sequence with the normal behaviour:
Jan 27 13:26:38 manila pppd[479]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <magic
0xd6a51a5d> <p
comp> <accomp>]
Jan 27 13:26:38 manila pppd[479]: rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x0 <asyncmap
0x0> <auth
chap 80> <magic 0x61af> <pcomp> <accomp>]
Jan 27 13:26:38 manila pppd[479]: sent [LCP ConfAck id=0x0 <asyncmap
0x0> <auth
chap 80> <magic 0x61af> <pcomp> <accomp>]
