I wrote, that I have a problem with kdvi: when I open a .dvi file the program
crashed with a message: xputenv.c: 63: xputenv: assertion `old_item' failed

I compiled the source and I realised two think:

1. The function 'xputenv' calls function 'putenv' not that, what is in the
source package, but from the 'normal' library.

2. In the xputenv are two line (at the end of the function):
if (old_item)
   free(old_item);

The environment variable KPATHSEA_DPI has a value. More times had the function
xputenv invoked with var_name "KPATHSEA_DPI" and normally ended the function.
Last time has the environment variable a value before 'free', but after this the
variable lost.

Should I to comment out these two lines without consequense?
