Additional information on the problem with trailing / characters. Perhaps my
lack of understanding impaired the original report, but accessing non-anonymous
FTP on local machines seems to produce the desired result; this contradicts the
original report. However:

* When a remote machine is being accessed anonymously (such as ftp.ksamba.org)
  a blank page is obtained, rather than a directory listing. Netscape has no
  problem with that site. If ftp://anonymous@ftp.ksamba.org is used, a password
  is requested but still no details are obtained.

* Perhaps some information could be given in the "Properties" of the window.
