You have to install the java plugin for the browser...

$ ls -l /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           39 2004-09-27 21:38
libjavaplugin.so -> /etc/alternatives/firefox-javaplugin.so
$ ls -l /etc/alternatives/firefox-javaplugin.so
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           70 2004-09-27 21:39
/etc/alternatives/firefox-javaplugin.so ->
/usr/lib/j2sdk1.4-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so

This is the way the plugin is included if you follow the description on
ubuntulinux.org to install Java.

If your java package has a libjavaplugin_oji.so or similiar you can link
to the file from /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/

After a restart of firefox you can check the loaded plugins.

bye
Markus
