FTP uses hand shaking and this can be configured differently on different
servers. Traditionally Windows programs, notorious for being poorly written,
have ignored the handshaking and some servers are configured to make it such
a low priority it produces time outs and other problems. I remember Windows
doing the same thing with print queues as FTP. That is, you stuff the files
in and assume everything just went okay. Maybe it did and maybe it didn't.
For years KDE's FTP KIO slave has had problems adapting to poorly set up
servers, but last I heard it was supposed to comprehensively work... So maybe
the server you're dealing with turned handshaking off. On Linux and KDE we
try to do things right and make sure you aren't going to accidentally have
files land in the bit bucket. The sad thing about gftp is they seem to have
just done a Windows implementation on Linux. Maybe they didn't want the bug
reports, just like people think their browser is broken when the Javascript
is the culprit or proprietary extentions are being used. Likewise the right
thing to do is to complain to the admin that their server appears non
standard.

In the end though FTP sucks because you're passing your site login in
cleartext repeatedly and it's so easy to sniff you may as well use "password"
for your password. As Andras mentioned try fish (ssh+scp) or sftp. Using fish
and ssh-keygen to generate passwordless keys you can make sites instantly
accessible to Konqueror, Quanta and SSH based CVS/SVN and never have to type
your password.

BTW I've been told by the developer who works on it NEVER to use
user.password@domain to log in with any protocol. Always leave off the
password and let the dialog handle it.
