Yes, there are a lot of ways to access this functionality. Even if the core is 
the same the fun user stuff comes into play.

Yes, it's not clear exactly what your "manual connection" entailed. Certainly 
if you still have a problem try to describe what you did that did not work in 
a little more detail.

There are varying situations that could cause a problem, including rare FTP 
timing issues. Some programs don't attempt to handshake like KDE does so 
Jens' suggestion to test with Konqueror is a good start. Unfortunately as 
simple as we try to make it even I have accidentally put the wrong thing in a 
dialog when trying to connect before.
