Ok,

Maybe I should re-phrase all of this :)

I started making a homepage manually, creating a directory
structure and tranferring files (I do HTML "manually" in 
emacs atm) ... then I got fed-up with the transfers, so I
d/led and installed quanta.

I'm trying to get the files from the ftp-server (synchronise?)
to my notebook ... however, the connection seems problematic,
and I don't quite understand how to get the initial copy in
the right spot.

Ftp seems to be working now (it fell over if I specified the
password in the dialog rather than waiting to be prompted
for it).
