It turns out if you only get a router's firewall address when using 
ifconfig the reason for that is that netconfig isn't set to dhcp or static 
but is rather set to dial up.  All that's necessary is to run netconfig 
again and configure for dhcp and then run dhcpcd and you get a working 
network connection through the router.
