Thanks for the detailed response!

(a) xfdesktop is what xfce4 uses
(b) attached xprop output
(c) restarting xfdesktop processes bounces the entire xfce4 session --
not very helpful, 'eh?
(d) I can click the desktop after detecting it, but where is "sticky"?
(I don't see it under the preference tab)
