hmm, this reminds me that all this makefile magic would fit well
into the new FAQ that is being assembled.

From simple things that can you enter individual directories and
make/make install there, to make force-reedit, create_makefile[s],
inst-apps, replacing variables on the fly by calling
make VARIABLE=xxx, make final/no-final...
