The preferred version would be trunk. By the time you finish your
study, what you have analyzed would have turned into a release (2.0.x
or 2.1).

If building trunk is too much for you (although it's easy with
kdesvn-build), use the latest KOffice 2. There are packages for
Ubuntu, see http://www.kubuntu.org/news/koffice-2.0.1
