I'm not going to try to answer the points you made point-by-point, but rather
try to present our reasoning in a more coherent way. After trying out the
current implementation and noticing some problems with the handling from a
user point of view, we decided to go back to the only really usable
diagramming application in existence: OmniGraffle
(http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnigraffle/). In fact, OmniGraffle is
not just usable, but fun. We had a lot of trouble dragging fascinated KOffice
developers away from Mek's mac...

Connectors in that application have the following properties:

* are tangible objects on the canvas
* can be selected
* have properties (like a label, but also line drawing properties)
* come in curve, angular, straight and other varieties
* can be connected to each other (very useful for lots of types of diagrams)
* can be dragged; if you drag one point away from one shape, then the other
point from the other shape, then you can drag the connector (with all its
settings and properties) to another place, and connect it other shapes.
* Are subject to the constraints of grids, but more importantly auto-snapping
guides

So, basically we came to the conclusion that connectors in OmniGraffle were
exactly like our path shape, but with connectors and some autolayout
functionality.
