It's not about public or not public. In fact, Jos (who reported the ODF 
weekend) has already said he'd come and report on it. It's about achieving a 
much higher bandwidth than can be achieved using email or irc. It can be 
tremendously useful just to take a walk around town with each other and 
discuss open problems, questions, design directions and so on.
