Basically we are planning on using the external dcraw application for this, so 
I fear that most of the changes you'd want to make will need to be done 
there. From what I know, it's a monolithic block of code that might not be 
the best and most nice place to start with, though.
EXIF information could probably be used, though, since we already have a 
separate 'encapsulation' mechanism for it (without decoding any information, 
though).

At the moment we're in a feature/string freeze, but after that you're more 
than welcome to add this kind of stuff (or develop it separately in 
playground, like Cyrille does).
