People who use word files will probably use nothing but word files, and then
it gets importantish -- but on the other hand, Gimp plugins all run in a
separate process, and they work out quickly enough. I dare say an import
filter that's started in a separate proces and communicates through dcop
still wouldn't hurt performance all that much.

Of course, the big problem remains (at least for kword) -- the contents of
many word files translated to KWord internals make KWord crash. I.e, KWord
cannot display all possible permutations of its own data model without
crashing.
