I just installed gcc 2.95.3 (after quite a struggle).  I finally 
configured koffice 1.1 beta 2 using:
env CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/local/include LDFLAGS=-s 
- --host=i586-pc-linux ./configure

When I ran make, however, I got (truncated as much as I could):

- -I/usr/lib/qt2/include -I/usr/X11R6/include 
- -I../../lib/kofficeui -I../../lib/kofficeui 
- -I../../lib/kofficecore -I../../lib/kofficecore 
- -I../../lib/store -I../../lib/store -I/usr/local/include -O2 
- -fno-exceptions -fno-check-new -DQT_CLEAN_NAMESPACE 
- -DQT_NO_COMPAT -DQT_NO_ASCII_CAST -c formulacursor.cc  -fPIC 
- -DPIC -o .libs/formulacursor.o
