Oh, just something I wrote that may be somewhat misleading about Kde and
AOL.  I don't think you can use cvs with AOL, but you can get the
snapshots, from any of the kde ftp mirrors.  Just download the snapshots
you need (at least kdesupport, kdelibs and kdebase) and then koffice. 
You will also need the Qt tar.gz which you can get from trolltech.com. 
Build Qt first.  After downloading what you need using AOL, reboot to
your linux partition and copy or move the files over to linux, from
which you can build Qt and Kde fine, even without linux internet
access.  

Eventually you will need internet access with linux or unix, which makes
things much easier.  The snapshots are usually within a day or two of
being current with what's in cvs, and are more than adequate for getting
started with kde development.
