As Thomas just mentioned, Kexi and KexiDB in particular is aimed at those tasks.
Feel free to do some research and start from scratch with native queries, 
_but_ note that your SQL statements will be specific to data-backend. This is 
normal once you use QtSQL. The queries are getting more specific as soon as 
you make them more complex.

Moreover, here's example: performing conversion of db data by hand, e.g. by 
simply populating tables with raw data converted to QString(), without 
koffice-level database drivers/providers is the pre-2004 state of Kexi project.

Joerg, optionally we can meet on #koffice irc channel as there are obvious 
misconceptions about what is possible to do and whether 'from scratch' 
approach is required.

I am curious whether you are interested in joining us in some way.
