It also took me a long time to find it in MS Word, I think file/statistics 
makes much more sense. It's not a tool or something, it is a statistic... But 
it's what I'm used to.

There is also a paramater (dynamically updated) you can add to your document. 
It used to be a bit slow, not sure how that is now, but it's pretty usefull 
if you want the # of words somewhere in the document.
