The "pg_dump" command is used to create a backup of postgresql database. The 
"pg_dumpall" command is used to backup *ALL* postgresql databases on the 
system. See the manpage for additional command settings that you might want 
to use.

I don't know about BSD systems. But on Linux, postgresql normally lives 
in /var/lib/pgsql . The actual database lives in /var/lib/pgsql/data/base. If 
you "ps ax | grep post" that should help you find where postmaster is 
looking. 

*It is not wise to try backing up postgresql with any other method than 
pg_dump or pg_dumpall*.
