I know. My observation was from the point of view of the first time
user. As already said, the default page size is normally a
desktop-wide parameter, for all the documents one writes, regardless
of the page layout. So my real question is the one at the end of my
original message: 

why isn't the paper size given a different check box, with the
template icons named just "plain text", "two columns", etc...

or, at least, the templates don't have complete names: "A4 plain
text", "US Letter plain text", "A4 two columns", "US Letter two
columns", etc...

The current window gives the impression that kword can do an A4 plain
page *or* an US Letter plain page, *or*, if one does want two columns,
it must be in some other page size.
 
I'm not making a real issue out of this: I'm just curious to know if
more information like suggested above was simply forgotten, or if it
actually was an interface decision of some kind (which one?)
