I know. My observation was from the point of view of the first time user. As already said, the default page size is normally a desktop-wide parameter, for all the documents one writes, regardless of the page layout. So my real question is the one at the end of my original message: why isn't the paper size given a different check box, with the template icons named just "plain text", "two columns", etc... or, at least, the templates don't have complete names: "A4 plain text", "US Letter plain text", "A4 two columns", "US Letter two columns", etc... The current window gives the impression that kword can do an A4 plain page *or* an US Letter plain page, *or*, if one does want two columns, it must be in some other page size. I'm not making a real issue out of this: I'm just curious to know if more information like suggested above was simply forgotten, or if it actually was an interface decision of some kind (which one?)
