Of course the "new features" are lost when opening in the old application.
Here the main difference is the "display levels" attribute, which didn't exist in 1.2.
Or are you talking about something else?

(PS: your last comment to the BR doesn't make much sense to me. 
If you don't update your version of KOffice, how will you get the "backported" 
code you asked for? And if you do update, why not update to 1.3 instead of 1.2.2?)
