1.2.1pre is fine.

1.3pre is a bit confusing. 
Once we have a 1.3beta1, 1.3beta2 and 1.3-final, will it really be obvious that 
pre < beta1? One might think pre == RC or something like that.

In the past I used something with "post", like "post1.2", to make it clear
that it's the "after 1.2" stuff, still far from anything the stuff that will be
released as 1.3. Plus it still leaves our options open, like deciding later
that the next release is in fact 2.0 :)
