Actually the apps (via some code in kofficecore) run more and more checks
at each release :)
The reason for those hand-made scripts is to find out how people can mess up
the installation, to make the apps more robust against that ;)
("first time" stuff is never very robust, one can change his installation after
running koffice many times...)
Two users had problems with not being able to open .doc documents - apparently,
one was simply trying on _one_ doc that didn't open (maybe a Word2 doc...)
and one had associated *.doc files with another mimetype (text/x-doc), so obviously
koffice couldn't know how to handle such files.... The fact that mimetypes are both
essential to the system _and_ configurable by the user is always an open door to
such problems, I don't know what we can do against it...
