I had the same problem with CUPS once, it didn't do anything because of a
wrong option somewhere for the printer. (the dithering mode or whatever it was).
Let put it this way: error reporting in cups has real issues. 
I had to activate DebugLevel 2 (IIRC) in cupsd.conf to finally see a relevant error message.

Anyway, this is definitely a CUPS problem and not a koffice one (phew ;).
