This seems to be a bug with the import filter, I don't have any Letter sized
Word files to check, perhaps you can check http://bugs.kde.org if this is a known
bug and if it is not, then post a bug report there.

This is known (by me anyhow) and I plan to change the open dialog for KWord 
at least, and probably for the whole of KOffice to fix this problem. Thing 
is that some other things have to be done first ;)

Laurent is working on DCOP for KWord (among others) and this will provide the 
way for better scripting.
Footnotes themselves are currently not done, although there is a framework for
it. The framework however has been done a long time ago and might need updating...
If you are interested in working on this (please :)  then we can provide more
help then this small paragraph...
