Are you sure, that you don't have the option to exclude the account from mail 
checking checked?
Do you mean _from_ your local mailbox? What happens, if you only check the 
mails from the server from the File menu?

If you compiled from sources, then you probably get output if you run KMail 
from a shell. Then you should be able to see, what KMail talks with the 
server. Can you send me that please. You can for example run "kmail > 
logfile".
