I tried to fix the "too tall statusbar" problem  last weekend . I modified
"kdelibs/ktmlayout.cpp" and it worked for khexedit and kedit. On my machine
they got the same height as in kde-1x. How do they (khexedit/kedit) look on
your machine ?

By default the status bar entries now changes the width to whatever is required
(the size of the string). It can be reverted to the old behavior. Look in
"khexedit/toplevel.cc" to see how I did it there.
