I don't know which other message you refer to. But if you only compile 
the Qt library (and not also all tools) then it shouldn't take that 
long. Use the following commands to only build the necessary stuff:

make sub-src sub-plugins
# make some tools
cd tools/designer/uic
make
cd ../../qtconfig
make
cd ../..
=====

This only takes about 10 minutes with gcc 2.95.3 on a Pentium 4 mobile, 
1.6 MHz. Of course it takes longer on a slower machine. But compiling 
kdelibs and kdebase takes much more time (around 2.5 hours). So 
compared to 2.5 hours the 10 minutes IMO don't really matter.
