This bug is most likely caused by the fact that too many files are kept open 
by KMail. (KMail keeps one file open for every folder.) This bug ("too many 
open files") has already been fixed for KDE 3.1. 
 
I doubt that there will be another KDE 3.0 release (it's already too late for 
KDE 3.0.4). But we will nevertheless backport the fix. You could then compile 
the latest KDE_3_0_BRANCH cvs version of KMail yourself 
(http://developer.kde.org/source/anoncvs.html, you only need to compile 
mimelib, libkdenetwork and kmail, all from the kdenetwork package). 
 
Alternatively you could reduce the number of folders until KDE 3.1 is 
released. You could for example remove all folders from 2001 and before.
