No. He's not right. ;-)

You don't need a filter for this.

Instead do this:
Filter all your mail by mailing list into different folders (I guess you 
already do this anyway). Then create one identity (including a 
signature) per mailing list. Then associate the identities with the 
corresponding mailing list folders.

Now everytime you "Reply to Mailing-List" or you create a "New Message 
to Mailing-List" automatically the correct identity (including the 
correct signature) will be chosen.
