To a certain extend it's feasible to have no local folders with one 
exception, the Outbox. The reason is that sending is independant from 
IMAP. It doesn't make much sense to store mail which is about to be 
sent on the IMAP server only to reload it a little bit later from the 
IMAP server to send it away. If the Outbox is local then sending (or at 
least queuing) will work even if the IMAP server is temporarily 
unavailable.
Hmm, I wonder where the sent mail is put if the sent-mail folder on the 
IMAP server is not unavailable.

Anyway, IIRC Carsten Burghardt is already working on getting rid of 
unused local folders.
