I think that this is a great idea.  :-)

But then I am of the feeling that kmail should be written as follows:

1.  Write a back end with a bunch of libraries.
2.  Write front-ends as necessary.
	a.  vi-mode
	b.  emacs mode
		(These last two are for us complete _freaks_)
	c.  iMail mode
		(just to anger the lawyers at Apple.  :-)
	d.  Eudora mode
		(a sensible default?)

3.  All die of exhaustion.  I realize that we don't have the time necessary to 
do all of this, so I am only suggesting this offhandedly.
