Because kmailrc is only one file. I realize that the kmail directory is only
one directory, and one accident can kill that as easy to kill one file.
However, applications generally open one file at a time for writing (like
kmail could for kmailrc or the kmail-filters file) instead of opening a
directory inode.

We are all very close to an application which opens and edits the kmailrc file
a lot. What application holds the directory inode open for a long period of
time?
