We would gain at least that we'd no longer receive a lot of feature 
wishes ā la "Merge KMail and KNode!", "Merge KMail and KOrganizer", "I 
want KOutlook!", etc. ;-)

But of course it's much more important to improve the interaction 
between these programs than to put them into the same shell.
