The scoring stuff has been disabled in the last stable version of KMail 
(KDE 2.2.2) because it's buggy (Duh!) and nobody of us wants to 
maintain it. So I doubt that your problem will be fixed anytime soon. 
Instead of scoring you should use a filter which executes a command 
which plays a sound file like "artsplay YouHaveMail.wav" or which shows 
a message box (knotify?, dcop something?).
You should anyway update to KDE 2.2.2 as a lot of bugs have been fixed 
since KDE 2.2.0.
