(not knowing about the details of the previous mails) -- KFileMetaInfo is 
file-based, i.e. it doens't know about URLs at all. URLs should be handled at 
least one layer above. We have the KFileItem class, which has methods to set 
and get a KFileMetaInfo object. We thought about developing a KIOSlave that 
extracts metadata from a URL (i.e. downloads it and applies KFileMetaInfo). 
Then you could pass that to the KFileItem object. 

In the KIOJob, you could perform any protocol handling as you like.
