I did try deleting the index files, as I knew they had sometimes been 
problematic, but it made no difference.  By moving the whole 
~/.kde/share/apps/kmail/  directory to my desktop I knew I could recover 
anything that was important.  KMail regenerated everything, and as far as I 
can see the only thing I lost was my customisations to the toolbar.  No big 
deal :-)

I can't say that I understand the script but I did try it on the moved folder.  
It returned '.sent-mail.index.ids:2'.  That's interesting, because when I 
have met the old problem of corrupted indexes causing lost messages that has 
usually involved the sent-mail folder.  Also, having deleted the index files 
once, they must have been generated then corrupted again very quickly.  
That's worrying.

I don't know whether its relevant, but since it happened at the same time I 
should mention it, starting kde on that laptop is now taking a very long 
time.
