Well, Mandriva newsgroup 
(http://forum.club.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?p=313737#313737) had a 
mentioning of the problem about 2 years ago. I did what was suggested: 
backup .Mail folder, delete everything from ~/.Mail folder and incrementally 
restore folder by folder from a backup. Going this way, I found the offending 
folder, but when I tried to restore that folder contents and its sub-folders 
incrementally, I was able to restore all of the sub-folders and e-mails. So, 
this may be a problem with .*.index* files, because those were the only ones 
I did not copy back. Furthermore, this was a folder where I moved e-mails 
manually, after they were downloaded and read in a different folder.

KMail is now working properly.
